Responsible Gaming of New Mexico is proud to support a new series of Money Management Online Workshops taking place throughout February 2026. These free Wednesday evening classes are designed to help New Mexicans strengthen their financial skills, reduce money-related stress, and build healthier relationships with money—all key components of overall well-being and responsible decision-making.

Financial challenges can affect anyone, regardless of age, income, or background. When finances feel overwhelming, stress and emotional strain often follow, sometimes leading to impulsive or harmful decisions. By providing access to practical education and supportive resources, Responsible Gaming of New Mexico continues its mission to empower individuals with tools that encourage balance, awareness, and informed choices.

Accessible, Judgment-Free Financial Education

The February Money Management workshops are held virtually via Zoom, making them easy to attend from anywhere in New Mexico. These sessions are intentionally designed to be welcoming and flexible. Some participants actively ask questions and engage in discussion, while others prefer to listen quietly and absorb the information. Both approaches are encouraged, creating a comfortable learning environment for everyone.

The workshops are led by Dawn Esquibel, a Bank Vice President and Financial Services Professional with extensive experience helping individuals understand and manage their finances. Additional sessions include licensed mental health professionals who focus on the emotional and psychological aspects of money decisions—an often overlooked but critical piece of financial wellness.

To further encourage participation, attendees will also be entered into a drawing to win a $15 or $25 Amazon gift card.

February 2026 Workshop Topics and Dates

Each workshop builds on the last, but participants are welcome to attend one session or all four. All classes take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

February 4 – Understanding Your Income and Expenses

This session focuses on identifying where money is coming from and where it’s going. Participants learn practical ways to track spending, recognize patterns, and gain clarity around their financial habits. Understanding cash flow is often the first step toward feeling more in control of finances.

February 11 – Managing Debt

Debt can feel overwhelming, especially when it seems like there’s “too much month and not enough money.” This workshop offers strategies for prioritizing debt, understanding interest, and creating realistic plans to move forward without shame or pressure.

February 18 – Strategies for Financial Recovery

Financial setbacks happen, whether due to job changes, medical issues, or unexpected expenses. This session explores steps for rebuilding credit, addressing financial damage, and setting achievable recovery goals. It emphasizes progress over perfection.

February 25 – Emotions and Money

Money decisions are rarely just about numbers. This workshop looks at how emotions, beliefs, and stress influence spending, saving, and financial risk-taking. Understanding these connections can help individuals make more thoughtful, intentional choices.

These workshops are sponsored by Responsible Gaming Programs, including Responsible Gaming of New Mexico and Sandia Casino, reflecting a shared commitment to education, prevention, and community well-being

These Money Management workshops support individuals at every stage, whether they are seeking to prevent financial problems, recover from setbacks, or simply gain a better understanding of their finances. The skills taught extend beyond gaming-related concerns and can positively impact housing stability, relationships, mental health, and long-term financial security.

These February Money Management workshops are a practical, supportive way to invest in yourself or encourage someone you care about to take a positive step forward.

By offering accessible education and compassionate guidance, these workshops help New Mexicans build skills that last well beyond February—and support healthier choices for the future.

The Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico (RGANM) is proud to celebrate 30 years of dedicated service to New Mexico communities, marking three decades of leadership in responsible gaming education, prevention, treatment support, and public awareness.

From the first conversations between tribal gaming leaders in 1993, their vision for RGANM was to proactively address problem gambling as tribal gaming came into being across the state. What began as a working group of designated representatives evolved into a formal association committed to recognizing problem gambling as a serious social issue and ensuring resources were available to those in need

Since its official formation in 1996, RGANM has played a critical role in shaping responsible gaming practices in New Mexico. Early efforts included developing formal policies, supporting the creation of a statewide problem gambling help line, and launching mandatory responsible gaming training programs for casino employees. These initiatives helped establish consistent standards across tribal gaming properties and ensured that employees at all levels understood how to recognize and respond to problem gambling behaviors

Over the years, RGANM expanded its impact through education and outreach. The organization sponsored New Mexico’s first statewide conference on problem gambling in 1998 and has continued to host annual conferences, even moving to virtual training during Covid, for nearly three decades—bringing together healthcare professionals, behavioral health providers, researchers, regulators, and gaming industry leaders to share best practices and emerging research.

RGANM has also invested heavily in public awareness efforts. This includes statewide advertising campaigns, multiple documentary film projects focused on responsible gaming and recovery, and the development of self-exclusion, credit and financial counseling, and marketing policies that prioritize player well-being. Notably, RGANM’s documentary Knowing When to Stop earned national recognition and highlighted New Mexico’s leadership in responsible gaming initiatives.

In addition to prevention and education, RGANM has supported access to treatment and recovery services. The association helped establish early intervention programs, funded treatment services available to all New Mexico residents, and supported the creation in 2002 of long-term recovery housing specifically for individuals affected by gambling disorder. More recently, RGANM has funded statewide prevalence studies and sponsored specialized training for behavioral health professionals to strengthen care across the state.

As RGANM marks its 30th anniversary, the organization also unveils its updated logo, symbolizing both its long-standing commitment and its forward-looking vision. While much has changed since its early days, RGANM’s mission remains the same: to promote responsible gaming, reduce gambling-related harm, and ensure help is accessible to individuals and families throughout New Mexico.

RGANM looks ahead to continuing this important work—building on three decades of progress while adapting to new challenges and opportunities in responsible gaming for generations to come.

As Responsible Gaming Education Month (RGEM) kicks off this September, New Mexico is poised to play a pivotal role in promoting safe and informed gambling practices. The Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico (RGANM) is at the forefront of these efforts, ensuring that players across the state are equipped with the knowledge and tools to gamble responsibly.

RGEM, an initiative led by the American Gaming Association (AGA), emphasizes the importance of educating both consumers and industry professionals about responsible gambling. This year, the focus is on raising awareness about the risks and rewards associated with gambling, enhancing gaming literacy, and fostering a more responsible gaming community.

RGANM’s Initiatives in New Mexico

In New Mexico, RGANM is leveraging RGEM to amplify its ongoing efforts to promote responsible gaming. The association is dedicated to providing resources and support to those who may be at risk of problem gambling. Through partnerships with local casinos, community organizations, and healthcare providers, RGANM is working to create a safer gaming environment for all New Mexicans.

In September, RGANM is appearing on 3 radio programs to give educational information aimed at both gamblers and their families. These radio interviews are designed to increase awareness about the signs of problem gambling and to provide strategies for responsible gaming.

Spokespersons for RGANM are also appearing several times on the New Mexico Living television program which airs on KRQE, NRQE, and KWBQ. You can watch the interview segment here.

By offering these interviews as well as the resources on the website, RGANM hopes to reduce the incidence of gambling-related harm in the state.

RGANM also distributed educational materials throughout New Mexico’s gaming establishments. These materials provide valuable information on setting limits, understanding the odds, and recognizing when gambling may be becoming a problem. By making these resources readily available, RGANM is empowering players to make informed decisions and engage in gambling in a safe and responsible manner.

Collaborative Efforts for a Safer Gaming Environment

Collaboration is a cornerstone of RGANM’s approach to promoting responsible gaming. Throughout RGEM, RGANM is working closely with New Mexico’s gaming industry to implement best practices in responsible gambling. This includes training employees to identify and assist individuals who may be struggling with gambling addiction. By fostering a collaborative environment, RGANM is helping to ensure that New Mexico’s gaming industry remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

RGANM’s efforts during RGEM (and every month) also extend to public awareness campaigns. These campaigns, which are being rolled out across various media platforms, aim to reach a broad audience with messages about the importance of responsible gambling. By raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about gambling habits, RGANM is helping to destigmatize the issue and promote healthier behaviors.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Responsible Gaming in New Mexico

As RGEM progresses, RGANM remains committed to its mission of promoting responsible gaming in New Mexico. The association’s efforts are not limited to the month of September but continue throughout the year. By maintaining a focus on education, collaboration, and support, RGANM is playing a crucial role in fostering a culture of responsible gambling in New Mexico.

Ethics Session IV: Gambling, Shame, Stigma and the Importance of Language

Join us for the 12th problem gambling webinar in the series from the Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico on FridayAugust 13, 2021 from 11am-12:30 pm MDT. This is the final session in a four-part series on ethics and problem gambling.

“Gambler, gambling addict, compulsive gambler”: This use of language is the norm, not the exception. It is so ubiquitous that we don’t even think about it. Much more has been written about the significance of the language of recovery in the Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health fields, particularly around issues of stigma and shame.

This presentation will address the importance of using our words and language to reduce stigma in the field of gambling disorder for both individuals in recovery and their partners in recovery. What we learn will be embodied with breathing. This webinar will count as 1.5 gambling-specific and ethics CEUs.
Our presenter for this session will be Dr. Loreen Rugle, PhD

Moderator: Daniel Blackwood, LPCC

Friday, August 13th, 11am-12:30pm
